Code

BLUE
Heart or Respiration Stopping

CODE BLUE

PURPOSE

The purpose of this code is to provide an appropriate response to a suspected or imminent cardiopulmonary arrest or a medical emergency for an adult, pediatric or neonatal patient.

USED FOR

Respiratory problems or cardiac arrest.

WHAT TO DO

1. If someone is having a heart attack or they stop breathing:
At Sunnyside call 31-2222
At Westside call 24-2222

2. If you hear a “Code Blue”, Make sure to get out of the way of any responders and follow their instructions.




Code

ORANGE
Hazardous Material Spill or Release

CODE ORANGE

Purpose

To provide an appropriate response to an actual or suspected hazardous material spill or release in a manner that is safe for staff, patients and visitors.

Used For

Hazardous material spill or release

What to do

If you see a spill that you believe to be hazardous:
1. Remove anyone from immediate danger of spill.
2. Call EVS using your Vocera and wait for them to arrive before leaving.

If you see a spill that is not hazardous:
1. Put up an orange cone.
2. Call “maintenance” using your Vocera.




Code

RED
Fire, Smoke or Alarm

CODE RED
Purpose

To provide an appropriate response in the event of an actual or suspected fire in order to protect life, property and vital services.

Used For

Smoke or fire has been detected.

What to do

1. Close all doors in your department.
2. Use RACER to make sure people are safe. (Rescue, Alarm, Confine, Extinguish Fire, Relocate
3. Use PASS if you need to use a fire extinguisher.
(Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep)




Code

AMBER
Infant and Child Abduction

CODE AMBER

Purpose

To provide an appropriate response in the event of the abduction, or attempted abduction of an infant or child from the facility.

Used For

A child or infant has been reported as missing from your location.

What to do

1. Ask patients/visitors to stay until the code is clear, but do not physically block them from leaving or entering.

2. Watch for suspicious persons, especially someone with a large bag.

3. Be observant and report any unusual person or activity.

4. If you see someone taking a child/infant note as much information as you can about them.




External

Disaster
Significant outside events that affect
or may affect people at our location

EXTERNAL DISASTER

PURPOSE

To activate the organization’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) in response to an event that has occurred outside the facility that has or is likely to disrupt the facility’s normal operations.

USED FOR

An external disaster such as an earthquake, tornado, fire, flooding or hurricane.

WHAT TO DO

  • If you are in the facility wait for instructions. If you are at home, check your email.
  • You can request information or report your status depending on where you volunteer:
    • At Sunnyside email VolunteerKSMC@kp.org
    • At Westside email KWMCcurrentvolunteer@kp.org




Code

GRAY
Combative Person

CODE GRAY

Purpose

To provide an appropriate response to situations in which security assistance is needed, such as those involving a combative or potentially combative person(s).

Used For

Combative or potentially combative person(s) without a weapon.

What to do

1. Get out of harms way.
2. Call KSMC 31-2222 or KWMC 24-2222. If you can not get to a phone in a timely manner, use your Vocera to call “security”.
3. Your safety is our primary concern. Do not confront but if it is reasonable, be calm and inform them you are getting help.





Internal

Emergency
Events that severely
disrupt routine services at the hospital.

INTERNAL EMERGENCY

PURPOSE

To activate the organization’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) in response to an event that has occurred within the facility.

USED FOR

Any internal emergency not covered by another code such as a bomb scare.

WHAT TO DO

Wait for instructions.




Code

SILVER
Person with Weapon or Hostage Situation

CODE SILVER

Purpose

To provide an appropriate response in the event of an incident involving a person with a weapon.

Used For

An active assailant has been identified.

What to do

Remember your active assailant training:
1. AVOID if possible
2. BARRICADE if escape is not possible
3. FIGHT only as last resort

When law enforcement arrives follow their instructions. Give them as much information as possible about the person, if you saw them.




Rapid Response

Team
A specialized team that brings
critical care expertise.

RAPID RESPONSE TEAM

PURPOSE

To activate the organization’s rapid response team.

USED FOR

A situation that requires immediate attention by the medical staff. For example, someone fell in the hall.

WHAT TO DO

  • Be sure to get out of the way of the rapid response team.
  • If you see a situation that you believe requires the rapid response team, call from an internal Kaiser phone:
    • KSMC 31-2222
    • KWMC 24-2222
